What is the Idler?

The Idler is a magazine and school which aims to help people to slow down, have fun and live well, edited by author Tom Hodgkinson. We produce a bi-monthly magazine, a range of online courses in subjects ranging from history to philosophy to ukulele, and put on live events and courses. Find out more here.

How do I join?

We offer three membership types.

Print: we send you six issues of our print magazine each year. You also get free access to Idler “Drinks”, the digital edition and the website archive (from £42/year).

Digital: we give you access to the digital edition of the magazine. You also get a mini-app. This membership is managed by Pocketmags (£34.99/year).

Digital Academy: we give you access to our entire library of 50+ online courses for a year. You also get access to the digital edition of the magazine, plus a selection of back issues via the Idler website. You also get access to Idler Audio, our library of podcasts and event recordings (£69.95/year).

Full Academy: we give you access to our entire library of 50+ online courses for a year. You also get six issues of the print magazine, as well as access to the digital edition, the back issue archive and the audio channel (from £95/year).

How do I activate my Idler Academy account once I’ve subscibed?

When joining the Idler Academy, you will be issued with Subscriber ID by our sister company Webscribe who manage our data. This ID will supersede any account you may have made on the Idler website previously – perhaps to buy a single online course or other product.

How do the online courses work?

Our online courses, or IDOCS, are video-based learning experiences, conducted by known writers in their field, with notes, quiz, certificate and community forum.

Once you have bought an online course, you will be able to access it by going to My Account>My Online Courses on our website. You can watch the videos as many times as you like, forever. All online courses are also downloadable.

How do online courses work for Academy members?

Idler Academy subscribers may add limitless online courses to their account. First, make sure you’re logged in to your account with your Subscriber ID and password issued by Webscribe. Then, to add a course to your account, go to My Account > My Online Courses and then click ‘Start a New Course‘.  Click on the course you would like to take and then click ‘Take this Course’. In future, you will be able to find your online course selection, digital edition and audio recordings under MY ACCOUNT. The online courses will be available for the duration of your membership. Once your Academy membership expires, you will lose access to the online courses.

I’m having trouble accessing my online courses. Who do I contact?

If you have purchased a single online course and are having trouble accessing it, please email mail@idler.co.uk or call the Idler office 0203 176 7907.

If you’re an Academy member, first, please make sure you are logging in using your Subscriber ID and password issued by Webscribe. If the problem persists or if you’re in doubt about your subscriber ID, email Webscribe on subs@webscribe.co.uk or ring 01442 820580.

Where can I read the digital edition of the magazine?

You need to be a subscriber to access the digital edition of the mag. Academy, Digital Academy and Print members can find the digital edition in My Account>Digital Edition on our website. Digital members are given an app via Pocketmags.

I’m having trouble accessing the digital edition of the magazine. Who do I contact?

How do I renew my subscription or membership?

You should receive various reminders to renew. However, if you have missed these, then give us a ring or email us.

Print: call our subscription bureau Webscribe on 01442 820 580 or email them at subs@webscribe.co.uk. If possible have your subscriber number to hand. This number appears on the address label of your magazine. It starts with the letters WBS and several zeros. To check your account online, go to www.webscribe.co.uk/magazine/idler.

Academy or Digital Academy: call or email Webscribe as above.

I’d like to know when my print subscription runs out. Who do I contact?

I haven’t received my latest copy of the magazine. Who do I contact?

I’d like to cancel my subscription. Who do I contact?

If you have a Print, Academy or Digital Academy membership, please email our mailing house at subs@webscribe.co.uk or call them at 01442 820 580.

I have a Print subscription but I’d like to upgrade to Academy. Who do I contact?

How do I buy a gift subscription to the magazine?

I have a coupon code for the Idler website – how do I use it?

Proceed through the checkout process until you are asked to enter code. First, add items to your basket, then click ‘proceed to checkout’ where you will be able to enter the code.

Where do Idler live events take place?

Our events take place at a wide range of venues in London and beyond. We hold dinners at the Union Club in Soho. We hold an annual festival at Fenton House in Hampstead. We also run retreats in Italy and elsewhere.

Where can I buy the magazine in shops?

The Idler is available to buy from around 100 independent outlets in the UK and Europe, including Rough Trade in London and Leeds, various UK Waterstones, Do You Read Me in Berlin, Colette in Paris and the Atheneum in Amsterdam.
