A Drink with The Idler | Phil Manzanera on Rock, Roll and Roxy

Phil Manzanera

Join “A Drink with the Idler” for a chat with Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera

Phil Manzanera shot to prominence in the early ’70’s as lead guitarist for Roxy Music. Born to a British father and Colombian mother, Phil has collaborated with musicians from South and Latin America, South Africa, Cuba and continental Europe. He has worked with many of the greats, including Bob Dylan, David Gilmour, Robert Wyatt, Tim Finn and Brian Eno.

Phil’s new memoir, From Revolución to Roxy, looks back at his long career in pop music and his 1950s childhood in Cuba, Hawaii and Venezuela. Phil charts his thrilling musical journey in super-cool sixties London and the Roxy Music years – from their early days, to the group’s second and third acts, and their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Readers also discover some of his colourful ancestors, including a 17th century Sephardic Jewish pirate, a British spy and an Italian opera musician. “A great globe-trotting read, charting 50 years… in one of the most innovative bands of them all,” The Times

The discussion will be followed by a live Q&A. The Idler Academy’s Head of Philosophy Dr Mark Vernon will present a short “thought for the week” to get our brains fizzing and the discussion will be followed by a live Q&A. The event will be  hosted by Idler Academy director Victoria Hull.

This is an online event. It should be like meeting up in the pub for an interesting conversation. We leave the meeting open at the end so you can carry on chatting.
