Some Idler Festival workshops and walks have limited capacity and need to be booked in advance. We charge a small booking fee for these events to avoid no-shows and to cover materials. Click on the title of the workshop to book.

Emily’s Walking Book Club, 16:30-18:00

Join Emily Rhodes for her popular Walking Book Club on Hampstead Heath, discussing Rumer Godden’s classic novel The Greengage Summer. Emily will lead the way along the Heath’s leafy green paths, while guiding a discussion about the book. She’ll ask questions, dive into themes and read out extracts as you go. For the benefit of fellow walkers, please ensure you’ve read the book beforehand!

Harmonica with Ed Hopwood, 13:15-13:45

In half an hour multi-instrumentalist Ed Hopwood will teach you to play a tune on the harmonica, one of the most portable, accessible and expressive musical instruments. 

Craftivism Workshop with Sarah Corbett, 14:30-15:15

Award-winning activist Sarah Corbett’s craftivism (craft + activism) has helped change hearts, minds, policies and laws around the world. Join her workshop and become a gentle craftivist. You’ll stitch a letterpress printed design of a renowned change-maker and take it home as an object of encouragement. No craft skills needed. Suitable for adults and 13+ 

Hampstead Architecture Walk with Harry Mount, 15:45-16:30

Oldie editor and author Harry Mount will take you on a walk round Hampstead’s hidden gems, finishing at one of the best of them, Fenton House. 

Ukulele with Danny Wootton, 17:00-17:30

In this workshop, Idler ukulele teacher Danny Wootton shows you basic strums and chords and gets you playing simple tunes.

A Walk Through Literary Hampstead, 12:00-13:00

Follow in the footsteps of John Keats, Charles Dickens, George Orwell, William Blake and Katherine Mansfield on this bookish jaunt. Sensible shoes are advised.

Fanzine Workshop, 14:00-15:00

Ioana’s popular Fanzine workshop is back in the Orchard this year.  In this gentle, hands-on workshop, you’ll explore DIY publishing as a way of gathering thoughts, feelings and fragments of everyday life – and giving them shape on paper.  Through collage, drawing and simple folds you’ll create your own handmade zine: a small publication that holds a piece of you. This is an invitation to work intuitively, to let go of perfection and to trust what wants to be expressed.
