A Drink with the Idler | Catherine Clarke on England revealed in its Poetry
£7.50
Join “A Drink with the Idler” as we chat to author Catherine Clarke about poetry and England
Author Catherine Clarke dissects what it means to be English through the ideas of England and Englishness explored in poetry. From love, to history, to the plague, to parliament, join Catherine as she examines the history of the country in twenty-five poems.
Catherine Clarke’s A History of England in 25 Poems is an innovative telling of England’s story which uses poems as historical artefacts. Through ‘wormholes’ of language and images in poems written between the eighth century and the present, Catherine explores anew the landscape of our shared history through the work of famous poets such as Chaucer, WH Auden, and Grace Nichols. She also introduces us to unknown voices, such as Mary Leapor, a clever, witty below-stairs servant in 1745; or Anne Askew defiantly facing martyrdom in 1546 — almost too painful to read.
The discussion between Catherine and Idler editor Tom Hodgkinson will be followed by a live Q&A when you will be given the chance to ask Catherine your own questions.
We’ll have a philosophical “Thought for the Week” from Dr Mark Vernon and the event will be hosted by Idler Academy director Victoria Hull.
This is an online event. It should be like meeting up in the pub for an interesting conversation. We leave the meeting open at the end so you can carry on chatting.
