Join “A Drink with the Idler” as we chat with astronomer Chris Lintott about the major astronomical events that were discovered by chance
In his new book, Our Accidental Universe, Chris Lintott takes us on an extraterrestrial tour of accidents and human error in pursuit of asteroids, pulsars, radio waves, new stars and alien life.
Lintott argues that amidst huge technological developments it is crucial to keep an open mind towards whatever might still be out there for us to find. After all, many astronomical events of the past century have come about largely by accident.
“Chris Lintott is a modest genius. He has quietly revolutionised modern astronomy.” Brian May
“Superbly written insights.” Prof. Brian Cox
Chris will be chatting to Tom Hodgkinson, editor of the Idler. We’ll have philosophical insight from Dr Mark Vernon and the discussion will be followed by a live Q&A. Your host will be Idler Academy director Victoria Hull.
This is an online event. It should be like meeting up in the pub for an interesting conversation. We leave the meeting open at the end so you can carry on chatting.
Prof. Chris Lintott is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford, where his research ranges from understanding how galaxies form and evolve, to predicting the properties of visiting interstellar asteroids. He is Principal Investigator of the Zooniverse citizen science platform, and presents BBC’s long-running Sky at Night. In 2023, he was appointed the thirty-ninth Gresham Professor of Astronomy.
