Don the Border Collie by Murray Lachlan Young

Murray Lachlan Young | 9 Mar 2016 | Poetry

Murray Lachlan Young

Don the Border Collie

(Who drove off in a tractor and headed off up the M72 before “crashing” into the central reservation)

Come and see Murray live at Libreria off Brick Lane on 7 April

MAYBE he was tired of working for the man

Or the vibe was on the farm was getting him down

Maybe he’d seen just one sheep too many

And he was done with all-the running around

And Don fell into existential crisis

Started reading Bukowski in bed

And woke up on that bright April morning

And heard a little voice in the back of his head

Say: Drive Don, drive Don, drive Don, drive

Go while you can man you gotta survive.

Jump on the gas lay some rubber and blow

Go doggie, go doggie, go, go, go.

Oh they say that he sat in the passenger seat

Well I’ll tell you: that’s not what I heard

I heard he waited for his moment pulled off the brake

Stamped a paw on the pedal whilst flipping the bird

And for just one dog -bright second

He could see his future open wide

As he smashed though the fence on the M72

Don saw the turning of the tide

He saw a clear blue sky and a pen in his paw

Lying by day on the beach white sand

Writing beat lyrics on a moleskin pad

At night playing pick up in bebop band

Now they’re making out he couldn’t take the pressure

They say he couldn’t carry the load

They say he crashed into the central reservation

Well I say they ran him off the road

Because people can’t handle a collie with a vision

They’d never let that cat get the cream

‘Coz its throw and its fetch and its whistle and heel

But they don’t dig a dog with a dream

So if you ever see a pooch in a motor

Trying to put the stick into gear

Understand they might not be playing about

And make sure you call out and make sure they hear

You say: Drive doggie, drive doggie, drive, drive, drive

Go while you can man you gotta survive.

Jump on the gas lay some rubber and blow

Go doggie, go doggie, go, go, go.
