Starting soon: History of London course

15 Aug 2015 | History

A History of London

WE ARE delighted to welcome author and historian Dr Matthew Green to the Idler Academy for a new course in the history of London.

Matthew is the right man for the job, being the author of Penguin’s London: A Travel Guide Through Time and our own Idler Press pamphlet, The Lost World of the London Coffeehouse.

Above, you can watch a short interview with Matthew, recorded at the Port Eliot Festival.

Matthew is an experienced performer and teacher. He is co-founder of Unreal City Audio, an enterprise offering immersive London tours.

History of London, a six week evening course, will take you from medieval London through to the Fifties via Shakespeare’s London and Georgian London.

Says Matthew: “Using maps, lavish illustrations and vivid anecdotes, you will look on in awe as the city cracks out of its medieval shell, sprawls into the suburbs, and blossoms into the biggest metropolis on the face of the earth, a monster city.”

And there will be free gin, that most Londonesque of drinks. Our new course starts on 23 September.
