The Idler Questionnaire: Jon Ronson

6 May 2015 | Books

Jon Ronson is a best-selling author and documentary film-maker. He answered our ten impertinent enquiries.

1. Are you happy?

I was happier before the wi-fi on this train went erratic. Now I’m frustrated.

2. What are you reading at the moment?

Love, Nina by Nina Stibbe.

3. What was your worst job?

I’ve been in journalism all my working life – since I was eighteen. I love the job. So the question should be, what are the worst stories you’ve worked on? Three months on a book about nefarious credit card shenanigans, which I abandoned. Everyone I interviewed was so boring. As I say in The Psychopath Test, if you want to get away with wielding true malevolent power, be boring.

4. How many hours do you work each day?

Eight.

5. Town mouse or country mouse?

Town mouse.

6. Does love bring happiness or misery?

This question has freaked me the fuck out.

7. Mp3 or vinyl, real or e book?

Audiobooks and podcasts. And Spotify.

8. What are your three greatest pleasures?

Dogs, hiking, movies.

9. Do you believe in the nap?

No. It makes me feel groggy and guilty. But sometimes it’s unavoidable.

10. What advice do you have for young people?

You’re good looking! Swagger more! Look at you! Woo!

Jon Ronson’s latest book, So You’ve been Publicly Shamed, is available to buy through the Idler bookshop.
