The Idler Questionnaire: Louis Theroux

“I have social anxiety disorder”

WE PUT TEN questions to documentary maker and occasional Idler contributor Louis Theroux

1. Are you happy?

Yes I am.

2. What are you reading?

Yesterday I finished Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Now I am reading So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson.

3. What was your worst job?

My own job, for a year or so in the early 2000s. I felt pressure to deliver ratings and I’d lost track of why I’d gone into TV in the first place.

4. How many hours do you work each day?

Sometimes not that many, but when I’m on location I work quite hard.

5. Town mouse or country mouse?

I prefer the city. Except on New Year’s Eve.

6. Does love bring happiness or unhappiness?

It brings intense emotion. Or it should. “Loving is the high-water mark of living”. DH Lawrence.

7. Mp3 or vinyl? Real book or ebook?

Yes to all of them. The last three questions have been very “binary” if you don’t mind me saying. Have you heard of “four-valued logic”? Yes, no, yes and no, not-yes and not-no.

8. What are your three greatest pleasures?

Friends, family, doing good work.

9. Do you believe in the nap?

Very much so. Occasionally, if I’m a bit underslept, I like to put my head down on my desk for 15 minutes after lunch. But sometimes I feel a bit self-conscious doing it.

10. What advice do you have for young people?

Have fun while you can, because before you know it your body will start crapping out on you.
